The Antigoal: When You No Longer Want to Live by “I Have To”

The Antigoal is not a rejection of life or personal growth. It is a way to hear what you no longer want to continue—and begin moving forward more gently.

When a goal no longer inspires you

Sometimes a goal looks right on paper but gives us no energy inside. It may be admirable, sensible, and socially approved, yet still feel like one more source of pressure.

This can happen especially often when a woman has spent a long time living by “I have to”: I have to cope, I have to be strong, I must not let anyone down, I have to get everything done.

The Antigoal begins when you honestly acknowledge: “I don’t want to keep living this way.”

What is the Antigoal?

The Antigoal is a clear understanding of a state, pattern, or way of life that you no longer want to maintain.

For example: I do not want to push myself to the point of burnout again. I do not want to live only to meet other people’s expectations. I do not want to force myself forward through guilt and fear.

Why can this be helpful?

When a conventional goal meets with inner resistance, the Antigoal can help you reconnect with what is actually happening in your life. It does not demand that you become a different person immediately. It helps you notice where you are tired of going against yourself.

From there, a direction can emerge—not a sudden leap, but an honest next step.

How to take the first step

  • Name what you no longer want to continue.
  • Describe how it shows up in your life.
  • Identify one action that supports the old pattern a little less.
  • Make that action small enough that you do not have to break yourself to do it.

A short practice: Complete the sentence: “I no longer want to live in a way that…”

Sometimes the journey back to yourself begins not with a big goal, but with a quiet decision to stop forcing yourself to live against your own needs.
